What to wear when you fly with kids

I'm setting off on a long-haul flight (27 hours or so!) in three week's time, and I'm already thinking about what will be best to wear for the trip. We set off in New Zealand winter (rain, 16 degrees celcius) via Shanghai (only the transit terminal so air conditioned to a pleasant temperature!) and arrive in the British summer (rain, 16 degrees celcius...ha,ha, only kidding, it could be hot and sunny!). So what is it best to wear?

I'm thinking: cotton leggings, mary-jane shoes, cotton jersey short-sleeve tunic over cotton jersey long-sleeve top, pashmina, summer rain jacket and plane socks in my cabin bag. Just not sure if that's enough flexibility built in!

I made a total mistake once before and flew in a jeans, trainers and a comfy polypropylene sports top. The top was a bad idea (and I was glad I had a change to a cotton jersey one after showering at Changi), the trainers were tricky at security check, and the jeans maybe weren't the most comfortable choice. So this time I'm going to get it right!

What are your favorite long-haul flight clothes?

  1. My favorite is yoga pants (no waistband), slip on sandal shoes, and a long sleeve cotton top because when I'm sitting still, I get chilled but with a 1 yr old and a 4 yr old, and struggling with all the gear I overheat too!
Also I always bring a shawl. I find it more versatile than a jacket. I can easily throw it on myself without unbuckling and my kids can use it as a full size blanket or roll it into a pillow, which they do.
My son actually loves to use it as a lovey, he covers up with it, like a blanket then holds the end fringes and says 'mommy's shawl, mommy's shawl'. Very cute!
